Unlike poles attract (north and south pull together) and like poles repel (two norths, or two souths, push apart).

Increase the current through the coil, add more turns (coils) of wire, or add an iron core. Any of these strengthens the magnetic field.
What is one advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet?
It can be switched on and off, and its strength can be changed. That is why scrapyard cranes use electromagnets to pick up and then drop cars.
